Sergeant William Herbert Martin
The only reference to this man's military service that I have located is in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour, which shows him as a sergeant in the North Irish Horse, living at Princetown Road, Bangor, County Down, and a member of the Bangor First Presbyterian Congregation. The Roll includes another reference to a William Herbert Martin serving as a sergeant with the regiment, but he appears to be a different man.
William Herbert Martin was born on 28 January 1895 at 5 Hughenden Avenue, Belfast, the third of seven children of woollen and cotton goods commission agent Samuel Martin and his wife Georgina (née Purdon). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Princetown Road, Bangor, with his parents and his four surviving siblings, and serving an apprenticeship in clothing manufacturing.
Martin's date of enlistment in the North Irish Horse is not known; nor is his regimental number. It appears that he did not serve overseas during the war.
After the war Martin returned to the clothing trade. By 1935 he was managing director of the Milford Clothing Company. On 27 July that year he married Sheelah Mary Millar-Craig in Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church, Bangor.

Martin's brother, James Purdon Martin, was a noted neurologist, working for many years at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London.
